LW342 Fiction Workshop 3CR

This critique course supports students in their writing of original fiction, with an emphasis on the short story form. Workshops form a core component of this four-hour long class, with students reading one another’s manuscripts at different stages of production, and sharing both oral and written feedback. Throughout the critique course, discussions focus on how an individual story defines and lives up to its own rules. Students write and revise two complete stories. They also learn elements of craft such as characterization, dialogue, point of view, plot, scene, setting, and voice from published works representing a diverse array of storytelling techniques and traditions. Class time is divided between close readings and discussions of published texts, generative writing exercises, workshops, and revisions of first drafts.
