MPSM357 Experimental Ensembles 3cr.

Experimental Ensembles is an opportunity for students to collaborate in significant ways on live performance. Placing embodiment, corporeality, movement at the center, this class focuses on the power of collective actions and ensemble collaboration beyond narrative and speech. Students are introduced to various performance making methods every week, exploring the artistic practice of directing, choreography, composition, and collaboration along-side the experience of following the direction of others. Students have the opportunity to use each other as actors, dancers, agents, and parts of their creative vision in varied environments. Topics include the examination of historical works that have emerged from: Judson Church dance movement; the Fluxus art; devised/physical theatre; live choral-based configurations. Along with weekly performance practice, students will present the final ensemble performance to the public at the end of the semester. No former performance experience is required as long as students are open and committed to live performance engagement.
