Academic Resource Center

OUR MISSION:

The Academic Resource Center (ARC) at MassArt provides services and resources to support instruction, enhance student academic success and retain a diverse student body. Academic Advisors, Success Coaches, Content Tutors, and Writing Specialists in the ARC guide students in identifying strengths, managing challenges, formulating study skills, and developing the communication skills necessary to share their artistic vision. ARC also serves as a place for peer-to-peer interactions that help in the transition to college level academics. Student Accessibility Services collaborates with the faculty and ARC staff to ensure that students with disabilities are provided the necessary accommodations and supports that assist in their success at MassArt. The ARC works closely with the Academic Compass Program, transfer students, and other college-wide efforts to support a diverse student body.

OUR SERVICES:

Academic Advising

The ARC is the source for graduation and curriculum requirements, academic college policies, change of major procedures, discussions of academic problems and issues. Academic Advisors within the ARC work with students to develop self-reliance, make informed decisions, and identify educational, personal, and life goals as they work toward the completion of their degree. Advisors complement the work of faculty advisors to assist students in navigating the extensive resources offered by the college and provide connection to those services throughout the Colleges of the Fenway and the Pro-Arts Consortium, which contribute to their academic achievement.

Academic Compass

The Academic Compass Program helps students who meet MassArt admissions criteria and come from underserved (or historically underserved) communities, such as first-generation college students. Compass provides academic advising and mentoring to help these students transition more successfully from high school to college, addressing academic and non-academic expectations within the network of student support services.

Peer Tutoring

Content specific tutoring is available through the ARC Peer Tutor Program. Upper class students are recommended by their instructors to serve as tutors and assist students to understand difficult concepts and to develop technology skills.

Student Accessibility Services

Students with documented disabilities are entitled to reasonable accommodations in accordance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), Amendments Act (ADAA) of 2008. ARC staff provide students with learning, ADHD, hearing, visual, medical, psychological, mobility and autism spectrum disorders the tools they need to fulfill the fundamental requirements of the curriculum and take part in the MassArt environment.

Success Coaching

Academic Success Coaches encourage students to become actively engaged in the learning process and to develop new strategies for academic self-support. Working with students on a one-to-one basis, success coaches introduce skills such as time management, self-motivation, confidence building, and study skills to bring about project completion. Coaching is available to all MassArt students.

Writing Center

ARC Writing Specialists work with students to develop written communication skills that support students’ success throughout MassArt and beyond. All college related writing projects are eligible to be reviewed by a specialist including general course assignments, research papers, artist statements, grant proposals, internship applications, and cover letters.
