Glass

The glass program encourages students to experiment with glass as a medium for individual expression, through the creation of vessels and sculptural forms. The glass program introduces students to technical processes such as glassblowing, hot pour casting, and cold glass fabrication, as well as kiln-related processes such as fusing, slumping, and casting. In recognition of the centuries-old glassmaking tradition, students also gain an understanding of historical glass techniques and how they inform current practices. The well-ventilated glass shed includes separate rooms for working with hot and cold processes and includes equipment used to cut, grind, polish, drill, and sandblast glass. Advanced seminars and glass studio provide an opportunity to discuss current contemporary art-making issues in glass. Students research the topics and artists important to their own development, and visiting artists, slide lectures, studio visits, and exhibitions enrich classroom discussions.
