HART216 Art of the African Atlantic World 3cr


This course will explore the historical and contemporary role the arts of Africa have played throughout the Atlantic world, with particular attention paid to the themes and art of African
peoples in North and South America. Utilizing all types of visual culture, this class will provide students with an introduction to African and African American art, artists, the issues they
address in their work, and give students a chance to explore a parallel history of art and culture outside the Western canon. Through readings, discussion, and close looking, students will
learn the methods and vocabulary of the study of Diasporic art.
