LASS247 China in the Modern World 3cr


This course examines major political, social and
cultural changes in modern China. We will cover
the major political events and revolutions in
China after the Opium War. At the same time, we
will study the social and cultural lives of
various human actors and social institutions such
as peasants, workers, women, ethnic minorities,
migrants within and beyond China, educational
system, nationality laws, and so on. We will also
place China in the global context to examine its
interaction with the outside world.

Prerequisites: LALW-100 and FRSM-100
