HART283 Russian Modernism 3 cr.

A survey of modern art and architecture in Russia from the beginning of the twentieth century. The course will explore issues of national identity and cultural autonomy that informed the emergence of modernism; the postcolonial relationship to European art; the tension between nationalism and internationalism, and how the experiences of exile and diaspora affect these feelings and the artistic expressions thereof; how artists respond to forces such as imperialism, authoritarianism, and revolution; and how globalizing and transnational social, economic and political processes call into question the notion of Russian art.
