MPSM219 Dance as Social Practice 3cr.

This is a course for students with no previous
a of movement, which emphasize awareness of
alignment, flexibility, and strength but the
course main focus will be on developing Social
Practice*/movement based pieces, throughout the
semester. We will be looking at the way dance has
been a form of Social Practice since its roots.
Through group and individual movement activities,
discussions, and participatory projects the class
will work together to create work and address
some of following questions: Why is making
socially engaged art important? How does the use
of movement and the body support our ideas? Are
there ethical responsibilities when making social
art? What are our civic and public obligations?
How do we make our own (in many respects,
privileged) subjective position visible in the
interrogation? Do we have the right to talk for
“the Other”?  (*Social Practice Art is a term for
artwork that uses social engagement as a primary
medium and is also referred to by a range of
different names: socially engaged art, community
art, new-genre public art, participatory art,
interventionist art, and collaborative art.)
