3DML229 Enameling: Copper, Color, Kiln 3 cr

Enameling has been used as a medium for color and image for millenia. This class introduces vitreous enamel on metal, or glass fused to metal, as a method for applying permanent color to jewelry and metal objects. Beginning with the basic technique of sifting solid colors onto copper, students are introduced to a wide range of common techniques through lectures and/or application including, sgraffito, grisaille, limoges, Basse taille, champlevé, cloisonné, and painting enamels. Enamel is an opportunity to add color, textures, and illustrative qualities to an often monochromatic medium. Students are encouraged to explore both ancient and modern techniques while gaining the ability to incorporate enameling into a contemporary context.[Formerly Titled Intro to Enameling]
