LALW227 The Female Gaze in Film 3cr This course is an introduction to feminist film
and theory with a particular focus on the concept
of the Female Gaze. Students will explore issues
of representation, visual pleasure,spectatorship,
scopophilia and subjectivity. We explore how
women are represented in mainstream film, and the
function and consequence of these representations
in a social, historical and cultural context. The
course will examine the works of filmmakers such
as Alfred Hitchcock, David Lynch, Sally Potter,
Jane Campion and Andrea Arnold, with a specific
focus on feminist filmmakers who subvert
conventional cinematic trends.
